How To Properly Use Child Support Payments

Basic Necessities

• Groceries, snacks, beverages, and other food items
• Clothing, shoes, jackets, etc
• Grooming
• Housing costs including; mortgage, rent, lights, water, trash, basic telephone service, etc

Medical Care

• Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance costs for the child(ren)

Uninsured Medical Expenses

• Usually parents must split these costs including;
  • Out-of-pocket medical expenses, co-pays, deductibles, prescriptions
  • Orthodontic care, braces
  • Vision care including eyeglasses
  • Counseling

Education Costs

• Basic school fees, textbooks, and other costs associated with attending public schools
• Basic school supplies (special calculators and computers are not included)
• Basic clothes, jackets, sweaters, and shoes needed for school
• Before & after school care are usually split between the parents
• Lunch monies are usually split between the parents

Extracurricular Activities

• Usually parents must split these costs including those for;
    • Summer camps
    • Sports activities, clubs, registration fees, uniforms, and other non-school related activities


• Daycare services provided through a licensed facility
• Babysitters, nannies, or other additional childcare costs are usually split between the parents
• Summer camps, spring break, and holiday costs are usually split between the parents

Transportation and Travel

• Basic transportation costs associated with transporting the child(ren)
• Cost for public transportation, taxi (or Uber) services (only if the children are involved)
• Cost of speeding tickets are not included


• Access to computers
• Television fees (with free HDTV this may be questionable)
• Internet fees
• Movie tickets
• Plays, concerts, amusement parks, camping trips, and other outings (usually split between the parents)
• Gym memberships (borderline and questionable)
